Man dies in car crash in Southern California

A man has died in a car accident in Riverside County.

According to authorities, the fatal accident occurred around 2:25 a.m. on May 11 near the intersection of Monroe Street and Airport Boulevard in the city of La Quinta.

When first responders arrived, they found a Kia sedan upside down on the sidewalk. Rescue workers were unable to free the driver from the overturned vehicle and he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The victim was identified as 27-year-old David Seth Gonzales, a resident of Cathedral City.

Officers say the preliminary investigation revealed Gonzales was traveling south on Monroe Street and failed to stop at the stop sign at Airport Boulevard. The victim lost control of the vehicle, struck the curb and then struck two trees before coming to a stop.

It is currently unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
